Bred by the country itself

The Irish Sport Horse began as a working cross: the Irish Draught — the farmer’s all-rounder that ploughed on weekdays and hunted on Saturdays — put to the Thoroughbred for blood and gallop. The mix was never theoretical; it was proven over stone walls and blind ditches, generations before eventing existed as a sport.

What survived that schooling is the breed’s signature: the famous “fifth leg”, an instinct for self-preservation that gets horse and rider out of trouble neither saw coming. It is why the ISH has topped the world eventing studbook rankings so often, and why hunting people will not ride anything else.

Buyers get soundness, sense and value — with one modern caveat. Continental blood has been folded in heavily of late, and some “Irish” horses are Irish mostly by paperwork. If the old stamp is what you want, read the pedigree, not the passport.

IT SUITS YOU IF
You event, hunt, or want a brave, honest all-rounder
You value soundness and sense over flash
You want the most horse per dollar in the sport
LOOK ELSEWHERE IF
You need spectacular dressage movement
You want uniform, factory-predictable type
A hothouse ring specialist is the goal
PPE — WHAT TO SCREEN IN THIS BREED

Every pre-purchase exam covers the basics. For this breed, ask your veterinarian to pay particular attention to:

Tendon & ligament ultrasound
Hunting and eventing miles leave signatures; a scan of the front tendons is cheap insurance on a made Irish horse.
Sarcoid inspection
Sarcoids are common in Irish stock — check girth, sheath and ears closely, and price any findings.
Foot balance & sole depth
Flat feet and thin soles follow some Draught lines; get the farrier’s eye alongside the vet’s.
