THE BREEDS
FIELD GUIDE TO EVERY BREED →

Not sure what you are looking at? Our breed profiles cover what each type was bred to do, who it suits, and what it costs — with a five-question match test to point you first.

WHERE TO BUY

Auction is the loud way. It is rarely the usual one.

Most good horses are sold quietly, long before they reach a ring. Knowing which door to knock on — and what each one costs you in fees, speed and recourse — is half of buying well.

01 Private treaty

A direct, negotiated sale — usually agent to agent, often before a horse is ever advertised. The quiet mainstream of the sport-horse world.

BEST FOR
Proven horses; discretion; terms
WATCH FOR
You only hear of it if you are in the network
VIA THE DESK— the deals not advertised
02 Buyer's agent

A representative who searches, shortlists and negotiates for one side. A buyer’s agent works for you alone and is paid on success — not by the seller.

BEST FOR
First-time buyers; cross-border; saving time
WATCH FOR
Confirm whose side they are on, and the fee
OURSThis desk — retained by you, paid on success
03 Auction

Public bidding, catalogued and dated — from yearling thoroughbreds to elite sport horses. Fast and transparent on price, but the clock is unforgiving.

BEST FOR
Bloodstock; pedigree; a visible market price
WATCH FOR
Short vetting window; premium; sold "as is"
VIA THE DESK— we bid on your behalf · sale dates →
04 Breeder direct

Buying from the stud that bred the horse. Deepest possible history and honesty on temperament, especially for youngstock and foals.

BEST FOR
Young horses; known bloodlines; relationships
WATCH FOR
Youngstock is unproven; patience required
VIA THE DESK— we open the right doors
05 Online marketplaces

Listing platforms where dealers and private sellers advertise openly. Enormous reach and price transparency; the quality bar is entirely yours to set.

BEST FOR
Leisure & amateur horses; scanning the market
WATCH FOR
Edited videos; unverified claims; vet all
VIA THE DESK— we screen before you view
06 Dealer yards

Professional yards that buy, produce and re-sell. Convenient — several horses to try in a day — but their margin is built into the price.

BEST FOR
Trying many horses quickly, matched to a level
WATCH FOR
Short prep can mask holes; ride more than once
VIA THE DESK— we know which to trust

Platform names are shown as examples of each route, not endorsements. We work across all of them on a buyer's behalf.

WHICH IS WHY

Six doors. We hold keys to all of them.

Your time back

A search that takes an amateur a season of weekends takes our desk a few weeks — we already know which yards to call, and which to skip.

Deals you never saw

The best horses trade by private treaty before any advert runs. We hear about them because we are in the network — now, so are you.

One loyalty only

Every other door has a seller behind it. We are paid by you, on success — the price we negotiate down is our own incentive.
